Where the Southwest Begins
The Wichita Mountains
The Rugged Landscape of Southwestern Oklahoma
Established in 1901, the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge is one of the oldest, most prestigious national wildlife refuges in America. This is the land of the Buffalo, Elk, wild Longhorn cattle, brilliantly colored little Mountain Boomer lizards, and many other creatures. The rugged landscape is a mixed-grass prairie that has never been plowed, surrounded by low granite mountains of immense beauty. It is the ancestral land of the Apache, Kiowa, and Comanche - all of whom have tribal headquarters nearby. This is where the American Southwest begins, and it's our secret gem in southwest Oklahoma.
