Mountain Mahogany
This wild, colorful tangle of God's creative handiwork is Alder-leaf Mountain Mahogany (Cercocarpus montanus) growing on a Colorado mountainside in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. There are several varieties of Mountain Mahogany. This one grows as a shrub in mountainous areas. The photograph is a detail of the plant. I had never seen it before and found it a fascinating sight.

Canyon Rim Trees
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park with some trees and rock formations on the rim of the canyon. Probably because of the name of the canyon, I didn't expect such a magnificently rugged and beautiful place. There was only time for a short stop, but this impressive place did not disappoint. The quiet beauty of this photograph stands in contrast to the forbidding grandeur of the canyon.
Technical details: Canon R6, ISO 1000, EF 24-105L f4 at 92mm, f8, 1/125 second. Edited in Lightroom Classic.

Sunset on Mt. Scott
Sunset on Mt. Scott was made in 1983. I was just learning about the rugged beauty of the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge in southwest Oklahoma. At the end of a hot summer day of hiking in the refuge, I was at the peak of Mt. Scott and saw the sun beginning to move toward the two bent Juniper trees. I thought I would take the photograph when the sun moved in between the trees - but the sun began to move into a cloud first, so I made this photograph quickly before the sun disappeared. After seeing the result, I thought it was better than the one I had planned.
Technical details: This is a film image. It was shot on Kodachrome 25 with a Pentax MX and what was at the time a brand new Pentax SMC 200mm f4 lens. Cameras at the time didn't record technical data, and neither did I.
